Reading on Reading

What is reading? Are we readers? The meaning of the term is often reduced to the process of decoding words printed in a sheet of paper, grabbing the hidden content and inserting it into one’s consciousness. Can reading be such a passive activity where the reader’s role is only to receive the already prepared information? Furthermore, what can be read? Is it only stories, essays or biographies that needs reading? Can the definition of reading include something more than that?

വായന ഒരു നിർമ്മാണ പ്രവർത്തനം

മനുഷ്യന് ഏറെ ചിന്താകുഴപ്പം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന പദം തന്നെ ആണ് വായന എന്നത് . പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നത് വായനയുടെ ഒരു തലം മാത്രമാണ്. സിനിമ കാണുന്നത് മറ്റൊരു തരം വായനയും, സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നതും സംഭാഷണത്തിലേർപ്പെടുന്നതുമൊക്കെ വായനയുടെ മറ്റു തലങ്ങളാണ്. നിശബ്ദമായി ഇരിക്കുന്നതും വായന തന്നെ. വായന എന്നതിന് സാമാന്യമായ അർത്‌ഥം “ബാഹ്യലോകത്തെ ആത്മബോധത്തിലേക്ക് സ്വാംശീകരിക്കുക “ എന്നത് മാത്രമാണ്. പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൂടെ, സിനിമകളിലൂടെ, സഞ്ചാരത്തിലൂടെ, നിശബ്ദ ധ്യാനത്തിലൂടെ ബാഹ്യലോകത്തെ തന്റെ ആത്മബോധത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാക്കി മാറ്റുമ്പോൾ മനുഷ്യൻ വായനയിൽ ഇടപെടുന്നു എന്നു പറയാം.
